Recycled Base Rock Cost in Northern California

Recycled Class 2 base rock costs about $12 to $28 a ton picked up at a Northern California recycling yard, roughly 20 to 30 percent less than virgin quarried rock, and it meets Caltrans Class 2 specifications when the yard runs the required gradation and R-value testing on the batch. Delivered pricing runs higher once trucking is added, usually another $6 to $15 a ton depending on distance from the yard.

That price gap surprises people who assume "recycled" means lower quality. It doesn't, provided the material comes from a yard that actually tests its output. A driveway pad, a rural road shoulder, or a foundation sub-base doesn't care whether the crushed rock under it started life as a quarried stone or a demolished parking lot. It cares whether the material compacts, drains, and holds its shape under load. Properly processed recycled concrete and asphalt does all three.

What recycled base rock actually is

Recycled Class 2 base rock comes from crushed concrete and asphalt, usually demolition debris or old pavement, run through a crusher and screened down to a consistent gradation. The finished product looks like standard 3/4-inch minus base rock. What drives the price

Four things move the number on a given day: volume, gradation, distance, and whether you're picking up or having it delivered.

Volume discounts kick in fast. A pickup truck load off the yard costs more per ton than a 20-ton dump truck load, because loading and scale time cost roughly the same either way. Contractors buying by the truckload consistently pay less per ton than homeowners buying by the yard.

Gradation matters because not every batch coming off the crusher is the same. A load with more fines (the sand-sized particles that fill voids between larger rock) compacts differently than a coarser load, and yards sometimes price finer, more consistent gradations slightly higher because they take an extra screening pass.

Does it hold up to Caltrans and county standards

Yes, but not automatically. Caltrans allows recycled concrete and asphalt in Class 2 aggregate base under its Section 26 specifications, provided the contractor submits certified test data showing the material meets the same quality requirements as virgin rock, including a minimum R-value of 78 and compliant gradation and Sand Equivalent results. That approval has to happen before the material goes into a Caltrans job, not after.

For a private driveway, house pad, or ranch road, you're not dealing with Caltrans directly, but the same underlying question applies: does the batch you're buying have test data behind it? A yard that runs regular gradation and R-value testing on its output can tell you where a given batch stands. A yard that just crushes and stockpiles without testing is selling a product nobody's verified.

If your project does fall under a public agency contract, a county road job, or anything built to Caltrans standards, ask for the test reports before you order, not after the load shows up.

How much you need for a driveway or house pad

Base rock is typically laid 4 to 8 inches deep depending on the soil underneath and what's going on top of it. A driveway on decent native soil might only need 4 inches of compacted base. A house pad on soft or expansive soil, or a section that'll carry heavy equipment, often calls for 6 to 8 inches, sometimes more if a geotechnical report calls for it.

Rough math: a 12-foot-wide, 100-foot driveway at 6 inches deep needs about 22 cubic yards of base rock before compaction, and compacted material typically shrinks 15 to 25 percent from its loose volume, so you're ordering more than the finished number suggests. For anything beyond a small residential driveway, get a cut sheet from whoever's doing the grading or house pad work rather than eyeballing it. Ordering short means a second delivery at a worse per-ton rate; ordering heavy means paying to haul off what you didn't use.

Picking up at the yard versus having it delivered

A contractor already running trucks between a job site and the yard often does better buying picked-up material and hauling it themselves, especially on a job close to Corning. A homeowner without a dump truck, or a job 30-plus miles out, usually comes out ahead paying for delivery even at the higher per-ton rate, once you account for renting or borrowing a truck and the time it takes.

Some public agency specs still require virgin aggregate outright, regardless of what test data a recycler can produce, and no amount of R-value testing changes that requirement. Jobs needing an unusually tight, consistent gradation for a specialized application sometimes do better with quarried rock, since crusher-run recycled material varies batch to batch more than a quarry's controlled output.

And if you need a very specific volume on a tight schedule, a yard's recycled stockpile depends on what demolition debris has come through recently. Virgin rock from a quarry is a more predictable, always-available supply. For a rancher off Corning Road building an equipment pad, that's rarely a concern. For a general contractor on a deadline with a narrow spec sheet, it's worth a phone call to confirm what's in stock before you commit.
