Helping Paradise Rebuild — Fire Cleanup & Excavation
The Camp Fire of November 2018 remains the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history, and no community felt its impact more than Paradise. The fire destroyed over 18,000 structures and displaced tens of thousands of residents from this ridge-top Butte County town. Walberg, Inc. was on-site within 48 hours of the fire's containment, mobilizing crews and heavy equipment from our Corning headquarters to begin the massive debris removal and site clearing effort that would define our work in Paradise for years to come. We were among the first private contractors working on the ground, and we have remained committed to Paradise's recovery ever since.
The rebuilding of Paradise presents excavation and site preparation challenges unlike anywhere else in our service area. The town sits on a volcanic ridge at roughly 1,800 feet elevation, with terrain that slopes steeply in many areas and rocky basalt formations just below the surface. After the fire, every building site required complete debris removal, ash and contaminated soil excavation, foundation demolition, and hazardous material handling before any new construction could begin. Our DOSH-certified crews performed this work across numerous properties, carefully separating hazardous debris from recyclable concrete and metal while meeting the strict environmental protocols mandated by Butte County and state agencies.
Today, Paradise is rebuilding with determination. New homes are going up along Skyway, Pentz Road, Clark Road, and throughout the Magalia and upper ridge areas. Each new home requires a building pad, septic system or sewer connection, utility trenching, driveway grading, and often retaining wall excavation to work with the ridge terrain. Walberg continues to support this rebuilding effort with the full range of our services — from initial site clearing to final grading. We understand the emotional weight of this work. Many of the properties we prepare belonged to families who lost everything, and we approach every job in Paradise with the care and respect that this community deserves.
