Screened topsoil and fill dirt delivered in Northern California typically run $26 to $82 a cubic yard, with clean fill dirt at the low end and finished screened topsoil at the high end. If you already have a pile of dirt sitting on your property from an excavation or grading job, running it through a screener usually costs less per yard than hauling it off and buying clean material back.
That second point surprises people. We show up to plenty of sites in Tehama, Butte, and Shasta counties where a contractor or homeowner has already paid to haul out a pile of rocky, root-filled spoil, then paid again to bring in clean fill or topsoil for the same job. Screening the dirt you've already got and putting it right back to work skips both of those bills.
What dirt screening actually does
A screener, whether it's a trommel or a vibrating flat deck screen, separates dirt by particle size. Feed it a pile of excavated spoil and it sorts out oversized rock, roots, chunks of concrete, and other debris, leaving a consistent, usable material on the other side. What comes out depends on the screen size you run. A coarser screen, 1 to 2 inch, is usually enough to make spoil usable as backfill or sub-base fill. A finer screen, 3/8 to 1/2 inch, produces something close to finished topsoil.
The dirt going in matters as much as the screen. Heavy clay screens differently than sandy loam, and wet dirt clogs a screen fast. On most Northern California sites, screening works best a few days after a dig, once the material has dried out enough to break apart instead of clumping into the mesh.
What drives the price
Volume changes the math the most. Screening 40 yards of dirt on a small residential lot costs more per yard than screening 400 yards on a subdivision pad, because mobilizing a screener carries a flat cost no matter how much material runs through it.
Material condition matters almost as much. Clean, dry soil screens fast. Heavy clay or dirt loaded with roots and construction scrap slows the screen down and can require a coarser mesh or a second pass, both of which add time and cost.
What you're screening for changes the output value too. A coarse pass for fill under a house pad or a driveway is faster and cheaper than a fine pass for topsoil meant to go under a lawn or a garden bed.
Haul distance still applies on either end. If you're buying delivered screened material instead of processing your own, the distance from the pit or yard to your site accounts for a good chunk of the price per yard.

For a homeowner clearing a couple truckloads of dirt from a pool excavation, buying delivered material is usually simpler and not much more expensive once you account for equipment mobilization. For a GC sitting on a few hundred yards of spoil from a grading job, screening what's already there is almost always the cheaper path. It's something we build into excavation and grading contracts when it fits the site.
When it's not worth screening
Screening doesn't pencil out on every pile. Under about 30 or 40 yards of spoil, the mobilization cost for a screener eats whatever you'd save versus hauling it off and buying clean fill instead. Dirt that's contaminated with fire ash, petroleum, or debris that needs to be classified and disposed of separately isn't a candidate for screening into usable fill, regardless of volume. That material goes through contaminated soil handling instead. And if a site has nowhere to stage both a screener and a spoil pile at once, hauling off-site and bringing clean material back can end up being the only workable option even on a bigger job.
Grading permits and how much dirt you can move
Before you plan on screening and reusing a large volume of dirt on-site, check whether the volume you're moving triggers a grading permit. The thresholds are not the same across the three counties Walberg works in most.

Butte County's threshold catches jobs that would fly under the radar in Tehama or Shasta. A driveway regrade or a modest house pad in Chico or Oroville can cross 50 yards faster than people expect. Check with Tehama County Public Works, Butte County, or Shasta County before you move a large pile. Moving dirt without a required permit is the kind of thing that turns into a stop-work order mid-project.
What to do with dirt you can't use on-site
Not every yard of spoil belongs back on your property, even after screening. If the site is already at grade, or the screened material doesn't match what the finish work needs, the leftover has to go somewhere. We haul it to our yard in Corning, screen out anything usable for resale, and handle the rest the way any other fill material gets handled. Can I screen dirt myself with a rented screener?
Yes, if you have a loader or excavator to feed the screener and someone who knows how to run it. Screener rental in California runs roughly $1,700 to $10,000 a day depending on the size and type of machine, so this only pencils out once you're processing enough volume to justify the daily rate. For smaller piles, hiring a contractor who already owns the equipment is usually cheaper than renting for a day or two.
Is screened fill dirt the same as topsoil?
No. Screened fill dirt has the rocks and debris removed but keeps its structural properties, which is what you want under a slab, a driveway, or a building pad. Topsoil is processed further and blended with organic matter to support plant growth. Using topsoil under a house pad wastes money on material that isn't doing the job fill dirt does better and cheaper.
Does screened dirt meet compaction requirements for a house pad?
It can, but compaction depends on soil type and moisture content at the time it's compacted, not just whether the material has been screened. Screening removes the oversized chunks that keep a pad from compacting evenly, which is a necessary step, but a compaction test is still what confirms a pad meets spec before framing starts.
What happens to the rock and debris that gets screened out?
Rock and larger material get stockpiled separately. Clean rock is often reused as drainage fill or base material on the same site. Concrete, roofing debris, or other construction scrap gets sorted and handled according to what it is, sometimes through our concrete and asphalt recycling yard if it's clean concrete.
